Aus welchem Grund wird der Mythos – nicht im Sinne von einer „Erzählung, die sich vor der Folie eines kosmischen und übernatürlichen Bezugsrahmen“ (Metzler Lexikon der Literatur- und Kulturtheorie (2001): 463) abspielt, sondern eines „(vorzugsweise narrativen) Bezugs auf die Vergangenheit, der von dort Licht auf die Gegenwart und Zukunft fallen lässt“ (Assmann, 1997: seventy eight) – höher angesehen als die wissenschaftliche Geschichtsschreibung? Und bezieht sich dieser Vergleich lediglich auf den künstlerischen Wert der Vergangenheitsvermittlung oder versucht er ebenso, eine Antwort auf die seit Jahrhunderten strittige Frage zu geben, ob sich die wissenschaftliche oder die fiktionale Beschreibung vorangegangener Ereignisse als authentischer und damit als wirkungsvoller erweist? used to be genau ist die Wirkungsabsicht der Historiographie? Die daraus gewonnen Erkenntnisse werden im Folgenden mit der vermittelten Erinnerung an den Spanischen Bürgerkrieg in Javier Cercas Soldados de Salamina in Bezug gesetzt.
Die Einstellung des fiktiven Autors zu Kriegserinnerungen verändert sich im Laufe des Romans. Dieser Prozess geht einher mit der Beschäftigung von Zeitzeugen, denn dem fiktiven Cercas wird klar, dass seine relato genuine (Cercas 2001: seventy four) weder dazu dient, sentimentale Erinnerungen der Kriegsveteranen zu konservieren (Cercas 2001: 21), noch ausschließlich zu einem besseren Verständnis historischer Motivations- und Kausalzusammenhänge beizutragen, sondern, individuelle Schicksale, derer die Historiographie keinerlei Rechnung trägt, in das kulturelle Gedächtnis aufzunehmen. Der fiktive –und damit auch der reale Roman Soldados de Salamina fungiert somit als Medium der Erinnerung.
Was aber bedeutet kulturelle Erinnerung? Im folgenden Kapitel soll zunächst der Unterschied zwischen individueller, kollektiver und kultureller Erinnerung skizziert werden. Halbwachs Theorie, nach der ein Kollektiv durchaus nicht mit einer state gleichzusetzen ist, battle ausschlaggebend für den Titel dieser Arbeit, da ich, bevor ich mich mit dem Thema auseinandersetzte, dem Irrtum verfallen battle, kollektive Erinnerung beziehe sich auf das historische Erbe eines Volkes. Die genauen Begriffsunterscheidungen, die ich anführen werde, sollen verständlich machen, aus welchem Grund der Titel meiner examine „Der Roman als Medium des kulturellen Gedächtnisses“ lauten muss und nicht durch den Begriff des kollektiven Gedächtnisses ersetzt werden kann.
