Die paintings der Kompetenz ist schwer zu definieren und weitaus schwieriger festzustellen als beim Erstspracherwerb. Die Unterschiede der Lernmechanismen sind hierbei interessant. Darüber hinaus ist die Parameterfixierung von Bedeutung, denn lässt sie sich nachweisen, impliziert dies simultane Erwerbsmechanismen und die Realisierung von Parameterwerten in der Zweitsprache. Damit verbunden ist die Frage nach noch vorhandenen UG-Prinzipien. Wird der Nachweis einer Parameterfixierung erbracht, impliziert dies wiederum den positiven Zugriff auf die UG. Warum sollte der Lernende daher nicht immer in der Lage sein, die mentalen Strukturen als Voraussetzung zum Spracherwerb zu nutzen?
